The Arthur A. Houghton, Jr, Library had a friendly wager riding on the Super Bowl….and we won!  As a result of the Giants’ victory in Super Bowl XLVI, the Greenfield Community College Library will send a package of books to the Arthur A. Houghton, Jr. Library that are Massachusetts and New England-themed, including the award-winning children’s classic “Make Way For Ducklings,” as well as “Home Town” by Tracy Kidder.  Kidder is a member of the Board of Trustees at Greenfield Community College.

CCC President Douglas was a longtime administrator and faculty member at Greenfield Community College  before becoming CCC’s sixth President this past July.

Thanks to Eric Poulin and the staff  at Greenfield Community College Library for connecting with CCC in this way!

The Library is currently hosting a display “Why Rice? Why Beans?” which includes information about healthy eating around the world.  Be sure to check out the display case featuring First Lady Michelle Obama and her interest in community gardening and “eating local.”

On Wednesday, January 18, 2012, the Wikipedia website will be “going dark” for 24 hours.  Why?  The editors of the site are taking this action to protest SOPA, the Stop Online Piracy Act, currently in the U.S. Congress.  According to those who oppose the legislation, the bill would allow the U.S.  government to order Internet service providers to block websites for infringing links posted by any users.  Websites like Reddit, Tumblr, and even Youtube, could be targeted for shutdown.  As of January 16, President Obama has said that he will not support the bill, but the Wikipedia blackout will proceed.

If you want to know more about SOPA, internet privacy, copyright, and related issues, take this opportunity to use the library databases!

Where is winter this year? It hasn’t come yet, but it has come for many years to Spencer Hill Road and to our CCC campus. Come on down to the Archives display case on the lower level of the Library to see photos of Past Winters at CCC on Spencer Hill.Fill out an entry form to predict the First Big Winter Storm Arrival Date of 2012. Final storm totals must amount to 6″ or more, as reported on WETM for Corning.  Entries must be submitted at least three days before the storm begins. Entry forms are available in the Archives from the CCC Archivist, Cindy Maier. One entry per person, and, in the event of more than one submission with the same storm date, the first entry submitted will be declared the winner. Open to the entire campus.

Do you use the Library webpage?  It has been redesigned!  All content is still there, but the layout has changed.  The librarians will be offering brief orientations to the pages on Friday, January 13 at 10 am and Tuesday, January 17 at 10 am.  Come check it out in L204 – any and all questions encouraged!

If you cannot attend either session but would like more information on the redesigned site, please contact the librarians at library@corning-cc.edu.  We would be happy to meet with you!  We will also try to schedule a few more information sessions once the semester starts.

Submit your paper for a chance to win $250 ($150 for second place)!
